Last week I shared some items that I love to gift to book lovers. Today I’m sharing my favorite books to gift. Gifting books can be tricky because you really have to tailor it to the persons reading taste. Aaron and I gift each other one book each year for Christmas (we open it on Christmas eve) and it is one of my favorite traditions. I enjoy getting a book but I think it’s even more fun to pick one out for him. Luckily I know his reading taste so it’s not super hard but I love spending time picking out the perfect book.
This list includes both fiction and non-fiction. I hope you find something to gift this holiday season or to read this winter.
For the Book Lover that Enjoys Love Stories
Modern Love: True Stories of Love, Loss and Redemption by Daniel Jones
Aaron got me this book as my Christmas book two years ago and I loved it. This is a book of essays based on the NY Times Modern Love column and there is now a TV show as well. This book is great for anyone which is why I love to gift it. There is something for everyone in this book and you can watch the TV show afterwards. This book is for lovers of all kinds of love stories and I think this is a great book to read around the holidays even though it is not a holiday book.
For the Book Lover that Enjoys Short Story Collections
Five Tuesdays in Winter by Lilly King
This is a short story collection which I know its not for everyone but I think this one is very good. Lilly King is the author of Writers & Lovers which I haven’t read but people love it. There are some stories with which I connected more than others but overall this is a great collection. I think a short story collection is a great gift when you don’t necessarily know the person’s taste. This book is for those looking for a thoughtful book but that you can pick up and put down since it is short stories.
For the Book Lover that Enjoys Historical Fiction
Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie
This is one of my favorite books I read this year and I think gifting a book that you love (to the right person) is so special. I definitely will be gifting this book this year because I really loved it. It is a coming-of-age novel about a young woman’s quest for acceptance in post–World War II Japan. The writing is beautiful, it has a plot and it is just heartbreaking. This book is for the lovers of historical fiction, strong female characters and beautiful writing.
For the Book Lover that Reads Thought Provoking and Eye Opening Books
Caste by Isabel Wilkerson
This was one of the most fascinating non-fiction books I’ve read this year. So important and powerful that I think its a must read. This book is for everyone honestly. I think it is so good and it makes for a great discussion if you want to also read it and be able to talk about it with whoever you are gifting this to.
For the Book Lover that Loves Finding New Books to Read
Bibliophile Diverse Spines by Jamise Harper and Jane Mount
I will be gifting this book a lot this year. This book not only has amazing book recommendations (all by diverse authors) but it also has gorgeous illustrations. I was super lucky to be featured as one of the bookstagrammers in this book where I recommended the book Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez. When I got the book I immediately put together a stack of books featured in this book I hadn’t read but that I had on my bookshelves to prioritize over the next few months. I think this would make a great gift to anyone that loves books
For the Book Lover that is Also a Plant Parent
House Planted by Lisa Munoz
In this book interior plant designer Lisa Munoz guides you step by step and room by room through picking the perfect plant for the perfect spot and incorporating plants into your indoor decor. I love plants and this book has a lot of great information about plants and how to decorate your home with them. It is a great book for a beginner plant parent.
For the Book Lover that Enjoys a Memoir
A Promised Land by Barack Obama
This is a great memoir of President Barack Obama’s time at the White House. It is a long but fascinating book that I think many people would enjoy. In this first volume of his presidential memoirs President Obama tells the story of his journey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency.
