Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses

I’m back with another review! Today I’m sharing my review of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I was nervous to read this book because I am not super into fantasy but I liked it!

Synopsis

Feyre’s survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price …

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre’s presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever.

Why Did I Decide to Read this Book

This book has been all over Instagram for awhile and everyone seems to love this series. I resisted for so long until I saw the new covers. To be honest the old covers made me not want to read it because it made it look like a childish fantasy book but I’m all about these new ones. The fifth book in the series comes out early next year so I wanted to catch up on the series before then.

Rating

4 Stars (An Excellent Book!)

My Thoughts

I am happy to report I liked this book! I just didn’t love it as much as everyone else seems to. I’ve read many reviews that say the second book is better so I am going to continue with the series. I’m hoping to read the second book this month but its so big, so we’ll see if I get to it.

I am not into fantasy so this book is out of my comfort zone. However, I think it was well done. I enjoyed the world building and getting to know the characters. This book gave me so many vibes from other books: Beauty and the Beast, Twilight, The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. It’s like if you took elements of all of those books and put them together into one. I found some parts to be a little cheesy but at the same time I found myself not wanting to stop reading because I wanted to find out what happened, especially towards the end of the book.

I liked that there weren’t that many characters because I felt like at times I was trying to figure out what things where I can’t imagine adding a bunch of characters to the mix. The character development is great, the characters are flawed but grow throughout the book. At times I didn’t like Feyre (she makes some stupid decisions) but you can’t help but root for her. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series and see where the story goes.

Content Warnings

Torture, violence, captivity, sexual assault, physical and emotional abuse, death

Ooh I didn’t realize this was both fantasy and YA. I like that you describe it as a mix of other super popular fantasy stories, I definitely want to check it out sometime!
