Review: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

A good girl's guide to murder

Today I’m sharing my review of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. This was my favorite book I read in Feburary!

Synopsis

The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it.

But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the murder, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn’t so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final year project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth?

Why I Decided to Read this Book

My friend Meredith recommended this book to me. Aaron and I were looking for an audiobook to listen to on our drive back from Raleigh, NC a few weeks ago and decided to listen to this one.

Rating

4.5 Stars (An Excellent book!)

My Thoughts

So far one of my favorite books I read this year. We were hooked from the beginning and couldn’t wait to find out how it ended. This is definitely a “bingeable” book that you can probably read in a day. It is a Young Adult book but I think anyone would enjoy it because of the mystery aspect. I really liked the main character and I thought the plot was believable. As with all thrillers there are twists and most of them I didn’t see coming which is always important with books in this genre.

As I mentioned Aaron and I listened to the audiobook and loved the narration. I definitely recommend the audiobook format for this one, there is a full cast and a whole production as the book has more than just narration (there’s phone calls, emails, interviews) which is always amazing in audio. It reminded me of the podcast Serial so if you are a fan you’ll like this one.

I hadn’t read a YA thriller in a while and I forgot how much I liked them. I am so glad that there are more books in this series (one that just came out this week!) and I will definitely read them all.

Content Warnings

Death, animal death, drug use, suicide, sexual assault, grief, bullying, kidnapping, adult/minor relationship, bullying

Who I Recommend this Book to

If you like thrillers you’ll love this one. Also this reminded me of the podcast Serial so if you liked that podcast I think you’ll like this book as well.
