Today I’m sharing my review of The Last thing he told me by Laura Dave.
Synopsis
We all have stories we never tell.
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her.
Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers: Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.
Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth, together. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they are also building a new future. One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated.
Why I Decided to Read this Book
I wanted to see what all the hype was about! This was a Reese Witherspoon pick earlier this year and I thought Aaron would like it too so we listened to the audiobook on a road trip.

My Thoughts
This was a solid mystery! This book is not a thriller, I think that’s an important distinction to make because you’ll be disappointed if you go into it thinking its a thriller. I listened to the audiobook and I was hooked from the beginning. I think the narrator was great and I recommend it in that format.
I think this book makes for a good book club pick because it makes you think about what you would do. There’s some decisions that the main character, Hannah, has to make I hadn’t thought of what I would do in her position. Aaron and I talked about those things while we were listening to the audiobook and it was fun.
If I had to describe this book with one word it would be enjoyable. That’s why I included it in my Summer Reading Guide. It is not life changing but you can easily read it in a few days and it is a great summer book.
Content Warnings
Car accident, Death of parent, Toxic relationship
Who I Recommend this Book to
If you want to read a mystery book but usually shy away from thrillers because of all the trigger warnings they usually have this one is for you! This one doesn’t have many content warnings but it is still a suspenseful story.
