Review: The Royal We

The Royal We Book

This book was recommended to me by so many people, everyone seems to love it so much. I was super excited to finally read it and today I’m sharing my review of The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan. Did it live up to the hype?

Synopsis

American Rebecca Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister, Lacey, has always been the romantic who fantasized about glamour and royalty, fame and fortune. Yet it’s Bex who seeks adventure at Oxford and finds herself living down the hall from Prince Nicholas, Great Britain’s future king. And when Bex can’t resist falling for Nick, the person behind the prince, it propels her into a world she did not expect to inhabit, under a spotlight she is not prepared to face.

Dating Nick immerses Bex in ritzy society, dazzling ski trips, and dinners at Kensington Palace with him and his charming, troublesome brother, Freddie. But the relationship also comes with unimaginable baggage: hysterical tabloids, Nick’s sparkling and far more suitable ex-girlfriends, and a royal family whose private life is much thornier and more tragic than anyone on the outside knows. The pressures are almost too much to bear, as Bex struggles to reconcile the man she loves with the monarch he’s fated to become.

Which is how she gets into trouble.

Now, on the eve of the wedding of the century, Bex is faced with whether everything she’s sacrificed for love-her career, her home, her family, maybe even herself-will have been for nothing.

Why did I choose to read this book

Everyone seems to love this book! The sequel just came out last month so I decided to finally read both of them.

My Thoughts

It took me almost 3 weeks to finish this book. I don’t think it was the book, I just couldn’t get into reading earlier this month for some reason. Overall I really liked the book I just didn’t love it as much as everyone else seems to. Mostly because it was really long. I think it could have been bout 100 pages shorter and still be a great book.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Bex, Nick and Freddy. It made me want to be friends with them! I imagine that’s how Kate, Will and Harry are in real life. The story was super entertaining and fascinating. It was a great narration and I enjoyed the flow of the story.

I enjoyed the banter between the group of friends. This book features a great cast of characters that you get to know and that is why its easy to get lost in this fictional royal family and friends. There’s lots of gossip and drama but there’s also some heartfelt moments with everything Bex goes through.

The book covered a very long period of time (about 8 years) and I really liked that we got to see how their relationship started and all the ups and downs. However, I didn’t feel a super strong connection to the love story. I think it was because the book focuses on their love story mostly at the beginning but then a lot of the story focuses on their time apart. Hence, we don’t get a lot of them together. I would have loved more Bex and Nick together. Maybe the sequel has more?

Content Warnings

Death of a parent, body shaming, invasion of privacy

Who I recommend this book to

If you are into anything royal or follow the royal family you’d love this book. However, even if you don’t follow the royals you would find this enjoyable. If you are looking for a story to get lost in this may be for you.

I agree that the romance between Bex and Nick’s is where this book shines and we could have used more of it! So much time is spent on them being apart. I really hope we get more of them together in the sequel!
