Review: The Sun Down Motel

I finally finished a book in this month! One of my goals this year is to read my Book of the Month books the month that I get them (check out my post on the Book of the Month subscription here). I picked The Sun Down Motel as my book of the month pick for January but I didn’t get to it. However, I didn’t let myself start another book before finishing this one first and I am so glad I did!

This book is not something that I typically would choose to read (it is creepy and there’s ghosts) but I am glad I got out of my comfort zone because I really enjoyed it!

Synopsis:

Upstate New York, 1982 – Viv Delaney wants to move to New York City, and to help pay for it she takes a job as the night clerk at the Sun Down Motel in Fell, New York. But something isnʼt right at the motel, something haunting and scary.

Upstate New York, 2017 – Carly Kirk has never been able to let go of the story of her aunt Viv, who mysteriously disappeared from the Sun Down before she was born. She decides to move to Fell and visit the motel, where she quickly learns that nothing has changed since 1982. And she soon finds herself ensnared in the same mysteries that claimed her aunt.

Rating: 4 Stars (Excellent!)

My thoughts:

This book is creepy (yes there are ghosts in the story)! However, the story is not about the ghosts it is about the characters trying to solve a murder mystery. There is a good combination of the murder mystery with the supernatural elements. The story grabbed me from the beginning and I couldn’t wait to find out how it ended!

This book has all the structural elements that I like: short chapters (it makes it easier to read), multiple point of views and timelines and plot driven but with great character development. I loved how the author described the Sun Down motel and the town where it is located at in upstate New York. I felt like I was there as I was reading it, which added to the creepiness. I really felt connected to both stories and characters. As with all thrillers there is a twist and I didn’t see this one coming!

The only reason why I don’t give it 5 stars is because it was a little slow at the beginning and the two timelines are very similar (they are both trying to solve the same mystery) so I had a hard time keeping up with what happened in each. However, this is an excellent book and I definitely recommend it.

This book is out today (February 18, 2020) and if you are interested you can buy it here.
