What I read in August 2020

What I read in August 2020! This month went by fast and I read some amazing books (so many 5 star books!). I was barely reading at the beginning of the month but I ended up reading some great ones. I’m excited to share these with you all. If you want more details for each book check out the review for each book which are all linked below.

Reading Stats

  • Total Books Read – 7
  • Pages Read – 1,238
  • Audio book Total hours listened – 31
  • Books by BIPOC authors – 3/7 (43% – I am focusing on this in order to diversify my reading so I’m adding this to my stats for myself)
  • Favorite Book I read this month – I can’t pick just one, I’d have to say With the Fire on High, Beartown and The Silent patient where my favorites.

Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall

This is an important book that I think anyone that considers themselves a feminist should read. There are so many important topics addressed, each chapter focuses on something different.

With The Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

I loved this book! I loved the writing, the characters, the food talk, everything. This book has everything I like in the structure of a book: short chapters, chapter titles, a plot and amazing character development. This is a story that is easy to connect and you find yourself rooting for the main character Emoni. Overall this book is about family, generational trauma, the love of a mother and love for food!

Format – Audio book

Rating – 5 Stars. Check out my review here.

The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

This book was super hyped. Everyone seems to love it so I was super excited to read it. Overall I really liked the book I just didn’t love it as much as everyone else seems to. Mostly because it was really long. I think it could have been bout 100 pages shorter and still be a great book.

Format – Physical Book

Rating – 4 Stars. Check out my review here.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

This book is making my list of favorite thrillers ever. It was “unputdownable” and it helped get out of my reading slump. The hype is real! The writing is so good and I’m glad I finally read it. This book has everything I like in a thriller: short fast paced chapters, a creepy vibe, and an unexpected ending.

Format – Physical Book

Rating – 5 Stars. Check out my review here.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

This was my first Backman book and I loved it so much! I can’t wait to read more from him. The writing is amazing and it made me cry. It is a book set in a hockey town but it is not about hockey necessarily. I am having Aaron read this one next!

Format – Physical Book

Rating – 5 Stars. Full review coming soon!

Afterlife by Julia Alvarez

This was my IRL book club pick for this month. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I really enjoyed the audio book narration. This is literary fiction (there’s not much of a plot) and I am picky with that genre. We had a good book club discussion and I was in the minority on this one, others liked it more than I did. I am looking forward to reading other books from Alvarez.

Format – Audio book

Rating – 3 Stars. Full review coming soon!

The Switch by Beth O’Leary

This book is from the author of one of my favorite romance books, The Flatshare , so I was super excited to read it. I’m still not sure how I feel about it I’m in between a 3.5 and 4 star rating. The narration is great, love the British accents. It is a cute story and kind of reminds me of the movie The Holiday.

Format – Audio book

Rating – 3.5 Stars. Full review coming soon!
