What I read in August 2021. This was a month full of audiobooks and overall a little over the place quality wise.

- Favorite Book I read this month – The Ex Talk
The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon
This is a romance with a unique premise and I loved it! I was nervous to read it because I had heard it is steamy but I think it was the right amount of steam for me. It has a enemies to lovers trope set in Seattle and covers some heavier topics (like grief). It is a great contemporary romance!

The Turnout by Megan Abbott
This was Jenna Bush Hager’s pick for August and based on the synopsis I was super excited to read it. It was a little disappointing and not really what I thought this book was going to be like. It is very dark and more of a mystery/suspense than a thriller. I’m not sure I understood the point of the book (maybe it would be a good book club pick so you can discuss). Overall, this one wasn’t for me.

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid
As you know Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favorite authors. I am making my way through her backlist books so I decided to pick this one up. Julia Whelan narrates all of her audiobooks so I listened to this one and as always the narration was amazing. I think this book has an interesting premise and I enjoyed getting to know the characters but It wasn’t my favorite TJR book.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
Next is a great thriller. This book is described as Gossip Girl meets Get out. It is a YA thriller set in a high school similar to Gossip Girl. The audiobook narration was great and it has two points of views and very suspenseful. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. It covers topics of racism, classicism, prejudice and bullying.

A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin
This was my book club pick for this month. This is a gender binding book (there’s satire, romance, mystery, magical realism) and not what I was expecting at all. It is a bingeable book and a great book for a book club. When I finished reading the book I didn’t know how I felt about it. However, after the discussion with the women on my book club I ended up understanding the book better and I haven’t stopped thinking about the book.

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah
I hadn’t read a historical fiction in a while so I decided to finally read this highly anticipated book. Another book narrated by Julia Whelan so obviously I have to listen to the audiobook. This is a heavy and sad book, you definitely need to be in the right headspace when you read it. I just finished it so still thinking about it I will let you all know my final thoughts when I post my review.
