What I Read in January 2023

January 2023 Books

Today I’m sharing the books I read in January 2023. I think I’m back into a reading routine so I’m excited to share with you all what I’ve been reading this past month. This month I was trying to finish some books I started reading last year and to be honest I probably should have DNF’d most of these. As you can see there are no 4-5 stars in this lineup.

Reading Stats

  • Total Books Read – 4 (1 physical book and 3 audiobooks)

Our Missing Hearts

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng

The first book I finished this year! I started reading this in December but didn’t finish it until a few days into 2023. I had high expectations for this book because I loved Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and this was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick. However, I was bored while listening to this on audio. The first part of the book is told from the perspective of Bird who is a young boy and it felt somewhat YA to me and took me some time to get into and also figure out what was going on. The second half of the book picks up and it is a touching story.

Format – Audiobook | Rating – 3 Stars.

Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety by Laura Zigman

This was my book club’s pick for the month and I almost finished it on time! This is a book that deals with some heavy topics. The main character Judy is going through a lot and as a result starts wearing her dog on a sling. We picked this book because we thought it would be funny but it wasn’t, I think the synopsis is somewhat misleading. The book is told from Judy’s perspective so you are in her head the entire time and it can be exhausting. I felt bad for her at times but I can see how some people would just be annoyed at her. Overall, I’m glad I read this book and had a good discussion with book club but its not for everyone.

Format – Physical Book | Rating – 3.5 Stars

Spare by Prince Harry

Spare by Prince Harry

Have you heard about this book? Seems like this was the book everyone was reading this month. I would consider myself a royal family enthusiast (have watched The Crown, read a few books about the royal family, adored princess Diana & would wake up super early for royal weddings) so I was excited to read Prince Harry’s memoir. I really enjoyed it and I think the audiobook is fantastic. He showed some real emotion when reading some parts and I think that made for a great reading experience. I would say if you are not into the royal family and just want to read this to find out some of the drama you will be disappointed. This is a memoir, it is about his life and what made him who he is. If you are looking for the drama just read some of the articles that lay them out. Overall I really enjoyed listening to this memoir and I recommend the audiobook!

The night she disappeared

The Night She disappeared

I have been reading this book since November and finally finished it this month. The reason why I picked this book up was because one of the main character’s name is Tallulah and that is our new puppy’s name. It is a fine thriller but I wasn’t surprised by the ending. I kind of guessed it earlier on. Also some of the characters felt like caricatures to me, not real people. Overall it is a fine thriller but nothing life changing.

Format – Audiobook | Rating – 3 Stars.

First monthly wrap up of the year! 🎉 Even though a lot of these fell flat I’m glad you’re feeling back into a reading rhythm. I can’t wait to listen to the Harry audiobook once I’m done with my current one!
