Goodreads Choice Awards My Thoughs and Picks

Goodreads choice awards

Today’s post includes my Thoughs and Picks for the Goodreads Choice Awards. The final round of the 2020 Goodreads Choice Awards is here! I love voting for these awards and seeing books that I loved get the recognition they deserve! In the past I hadn’t read many of the finalists but this year I’ve read more of them and have so many on my TBR. I’ve linked my reviews of the ones I’ve read below.

The Categories I voted for

I only voted for books that I have read. If I didn’t read any books in a category I didn’t vote. You don’t have to vote for books in all categories. I don’t know if this is how everyone does it but it doesn’t feel right to vote for books I haven’t read just because they sound good or others like it. The books with bold fonts or links are the books I’ve read in each category.

Best Fiction

I’ve read 7 of the 10 finalists and that is impressive. I’ve loved most of the ones I’ve read but there is a clear winner in my opinion.

Finalists:

My Vote – The Girl wtih the Louding Voice

Best Mystery & Thriller

I’ve read 4 of the 10 finalists. This year I’ve read a lot more thrillers than usual and in my opinion there were better ones to include in this list but the one’s I’ve read I loved.

Finalists:

My Vote – The Guest List

Best Historical Fiction

I can’t believe I’ve only read 1 book in this category. Historical fiction hasn’t been a priority for me this year but that’s ok. I do feel very strongly about my pick for this category.

Finalists:

  • The Evening and the morning
  • The Vanishing Half
  • The Pull of the Stars
  • The Book of Longings
  • The Jane Austen Society
  • The Henna Artist
  • Magic Lessons
  • The Book of Lost Names
  • The Book of Lost Friends
  • A Long Petal of the Sea

My Vote – The Vanishing Half

Best Romance

I’ve read 6 of the 10 finalists. This year I have read more romance than usual as well. This was one of the hardest categories for me to choose which book to vote for.

Finalists:

My Vote – The Happy Ever After Playlist

Best Humor

I’ve only read 1 book in this category, it is a picture book and quite funny. I have other books on this list on my TBR as well. Books in this category make for great gifts for the holidays too!

Finalists:

  • Becoming Duchess
  • Strange Planet
  • The office: The Untold story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s
  • Is this anything?
  • A Very Punchable Face
  • Solutions and other problems
  • F*ck your diet
  • Wow, no thank you.
  • Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood
  • The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad

My Vote – Strange Planet

Best Non-Fiction

I’ve read 2 of the finalists but many of these are on my TBR! I’ve seen great reviews of some of these and some of them are new to me.

Finalists:

  • Me and White supremacy
  • Rage
  • Hidden Valley Road
  • Buy yourself teh fucking lilies
  • Why we can’t sleep
  • Hood Feminism
  • Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You
  • Don’t Overthink It
  • Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other
  • Get Out of Your Head: Stopping the Spiral of Toxic Thoughts

My Vote – Hood Feminism

Best Memoir & Autobiography

I’ve only read 1 of the finalists so that is what my vote is going for. However, I just started A Promised Land by Barack Obama and I’m already loving it. The audiobook is amazing which is narrated by the author. I was surprised this was an option even before the book came out.

Finalists:

  • The Beauty in Breaking
  • All boys Aren’t Blue
  • The Meaning of Mariah Carey
  • The Aanswer is…
  • Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man
  • A Promised Land (currently reading!)
  • Untamed
  • Everything Beautiful in It’s time
  • Hollywood Park
  • Open Book

My Vote – Untamed (even though I think this is better classified as self help than a memoir)

Best Debut Novel

I love this category! I’ve read 3 of the 10 finalists and have a lot of the remaning ones on my TBR. It was an easy choice for me. I’ve read my pick twice!

Finalists:

My Vote – Such a Fun Age

Best Young Adult

I can finally vote on this category! As you know I’ve been reading a lot of Young Adult this year. I’ve read 2 of the 10 finalists and I personally think some good books got left out (like Furia!). I feel very strongly about my vote and I hope it wins!

Finalists:

  • Clap When you Land
  • The Gravity of Us
  • One of Us is Next
  • The Inheritance Games
  • Felix Ever After
  • The Hand on teh Wall
  • Majesty
  • You Should see me in a Crown
  • A good girl’s guide to murder
  • Tweet Cute

My Vote – Clap When you Land

Picture Books

I know you are probably thinking I havent “read” any of these books why am I voting but I actually have read one of these. I gifted it to one of my friends that is having a baby so I read it before I gave it to her. It is a great book!

  • Science Fiction
  • Horror
  • History and Biography
  • Science & Technology
  • Food & Cookbooks
  • Graphic Novels & Comics
  • Poetry
  • Young Adult Fantasy & Science fiction
